Today, there are many internationally recognized female architects, such as Pritzker Architecture Prize recipients Kazuyo Sejima and Dame Zaha Mohammad Hadid; and Dutch architect, Francine Houben, who designed the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying), Kaohsiung Main Station, the Kaohsiung Public Library, and the Tainan Municipal Library. However, the development of Tse-Lan Hsiu, Chiu-Hwa Wang and Hsiu-lian Wang in the 30s and 40s marks the first generation of female architects in Taiwan that still lacks a complete record in our architectural history. WOMEN in Architecture Taiwan was established in May of 2018. The organization consists of 60 female architects across different disciplines who seek to expand their uniquely refined and diverse approach to spatial design while also working to record the herstory of female architects in Taiwan. Peini Beatrice Hsieh, President of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) Taiwan notes that “Female architects are distinct from male architects in that their specific approach to spatial design emphasizes horizontal expansion that favors nature, open spaces, and a connection to the earth that brings people closer together.”
